Brussels, February 14, 2025 – Marta Barandiy has been selected as a Marshall Memorial Fellow by the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), a prestigious recognition that highlights her dedication to leadership, diplomacy, and transatlantic cooperation.
The Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) is GMF’s flagship leadership development program, launched in 1982 to prepare emerging leaders from both sides of the Atlantic for significant roles in transatlantic relations. The program is designed to foster international bonds, enhance leadership skills, and promote democratic values and public diplomacy. Fellows engage in active distance learning, leadership seminars, and immersive exchange experiences, providing them with unique insights into global governance and diplomacy.
Strengthening Transatlantic Ties
The MMF program has established a strong network of influential alumni who actively contribute to shaping transatlantic affairs. As the world faces increasing geopolitical and democratic challenges, initiatives like the MMF play a vital role in empowering leaders to navigate and influence the future of global relations.
Sarah Jones, Managing Director of Leadership Programs at GMF, emphasized the significance of the fellowship:
“As Europe and the United States face mounting challenges to democracy, remaining engaged on both sides of the Atlantic and developing the next generation of leaders who will promote democratic values and public diplomacy is imperative to GMF’s mission.”
A Legacy of Leadership
The MMF program is named in honor of George C. Marshall, the U.S. general and statesman who played a pivotal role in transatlantic relations after World War II through the European Recovery Program, commonly known as the Marshall Plan. The fellowship is made possible with the support of organizations like the Kresge Foundation, Cleveland Foundation, Phokion Potamianos, alumni contributions, and GMF.
